Assignment 2: Robert Mapplethorpe

Self-portrait is considered a direct depiction of personality and identity.

For instance, on the first photo, Robert portrays himself as a stereotypical bad boy from the 50s in a leather jacket, cigarette and ‘Cry Baby’ hairstyle. However, on the following self-portraits, Mapplethorpe appears as a transvestite with very noticeable makeup and naked torso; and a persona of devil with tiny horns on his head and a sneaky face expression. Thus, The photographer presents us with different aspects of personality.
Robert Mapplethorpe mostly works in black-and-white. He is truly dedicated to minimalism in his works. Only his upper body and sometimes a small object on a dark background are on the pictures.
